Mental Health Advocacy

I want to help with the improvement in our schools what career is this?
I see in the education system, counselors tend to not get involved much with the schools— doing advocacy, prevention programs, making sure children and parents are aware, making sure mental health is important in the home, school, and community. I obviously take pride in these things.
What career would be best for me, since I am so passionate in this!
My son has his masters in counseling
and is a high school guidance counselor,
any thing to do with the understanding of
the mind especially children in there developing
stages, and learning the whys of what humans
do is the first step in building a better tomorrow,
and what better tomorrow could there be than a
child sent on the right track in life, go for it, you
won’t be disappointed not mention, a lot of kids
will love you for it and what better compensation
is there? then that . . .

Mental Health Self-Help $80.88 Building on earlier patient-empowerment movements, consumer- and advocate-driven mental health self-help (MHSH) initiatives currently outnumber traditional mental health organizations. At the same time, this apparent success raises significant questions about their short-term efficacy and their value to lasting recovery. "Mental Health Self-Help" assembles the state of the evidence on the effectiveness of MHSH, beginning with the individual and larger social factors behind the expansion of consumer-directed services. Clearly organized and accessibly written, this book traces the development and evolution of MHSH as both alternative and adjunct to traditional mental health structures, offers research-based perspectives on the various forms of MHSH, and identifies potential areas for consumer initiatives to work with – and help improve – mental health systems. Contributors weigh strengths and limitations, raise research and methodology questions, and discuss funding and training issues to give readers a deeper understanding of the field and an informed look at its future impact on mental health treatment.Individual chapters cover the spectrum of contemporary self-help initiatives in mental health, including: Online mutual aid groups; Consumer-run drop-in centers; Family and caregiver groups; Certified peer support specialists; Consumer advocacy initiatives; Technical assistance organizations; and, Professional/self-help collaborations. "Mental Health Self-Help" is a bedrock guide to an increasingly influential aspect of the mental health landscape. Researchers studying these initiatives from a variety of fields including community and clinical psychology, and public health – as well as clinicians, counselors, social workers, case managers, and policymakers – will find it an indispensable reference. |

Corrections, Mental Health, and Social Policy $63.95 This book is well suited to readers dealing with correctional issues in today’s complex global society. Given the task of providing adequate mental health care to the burgeoning U.S. prison population, including those thousands with serious mental illnesses who have defaulted from the nation’s disjointed mental health systems, the book provides a consideration of approaches and ideas beyond those generated in the domestic academic-practitioner community, including the mental health concerns that transcend borders and national sovereignty. In this category are the treatment and management of terrorists, immigrants, political prisoners, transnational gang members and drug traffickers, and those who have been victimized by imprisonment. The book purposely takes an unconventional approach intended to challenge intellectual complacency, to leave readers with fresh perspectives regarding previously familiar concepts, and to propose new ideas and goals for correctional practice, research, teaching, advocacy, and social policy development. Toward this end, several foreign mental health professionals or academics with a specialty in correctional mental health research and practice contribute to a volume that may challenge the ways in which mental health issues have been traditionally approached. In so doing, the book better informs and guides the readers as theorists, scientists, practitioners, and advocates. It will be of interest to a wide range of health care providers, criminal justice and legal professionals, social and political scientists, and students of psychology and criminal justice. |

Mental Health – Facing the Challenges, Building Solutions $45 This international book aims to bring to life the mental health dimension of health promotion. It describes the concepts relating to promotion of mental health, the emerging evidence for the effectiveness of interventions, and the public health policy and practice implications. The book includes evidence on the relationship between social and cultural factors and the mental health of individuals and communities. It reviews the available evidence from a range of countries and cultures. It documents how actions such as advocacy, policy and project development, legislative and regulatory reform, communications, research and evaluation may be achieved and monitored in countries at all stages of economic development. It considers strategies for continued growth of the evidence base and approaches to determining cost-effectiveness of actions. The book concludes that international cooperation and alliances will play a critical role in generating and applying the evidence by encouraging the social action required and monitoring the impact on mental health of a range of policies and practices. The evidence provided for the health and non-health interventions for mental health benefits is likely to be useful to health policy planners and public health professionals. The emphasis, however, is on the urgent need for a more systematic generation of evidence in the coming years, so that a stronger scientific base for further planning can be developed |
